I know a build thread is no fun with out pics but I dont have much right now so you will have to deal with it.
I have a 96 Jetta GLS. About 3 years ago I did a VR swap on it. I was being lazy and cheap at the moment and neglected to change the timing chains and clutch. After completing the swap I could not get the clutch fully bled (but was drivable) so I took it to the stealership and 250 smackers later had a working clutch. Other then the clutch issue, it had a real rough idle but would run fine if it was not idling.
On its first voyage up to the north country I started smelling clutch north of Belle and boom no more clutch. I got it to Buffalo and parked it there and intended on working on it "sometime". About a year went by and I finally decided I needed to go get it.
I started off by tracking down the rough idle problem. I changed about every sensor I could get to and found some vacuum leaks and viola a smooth idling vr6 . Next came the clutch... Again, being cheap I fell into a ebay clutch that sounded really good. I pulled the jetta into the shop and 6 hours later had her back on the road. I then decided that I was going to read some reviews on the clutch (because I had some fitment issues) I purchased and it kind of seemed that they were good up to about 5000 miles. I should have have done that before actually purchasing it but owell it was done.
I used the jetta for a DD for about 6 months with no issues then one day I pulled into the house and got that awesome smell of clutch and it was toast. I had been stockpiling parts I intended on putting in after I had everything so I just had to add a clutch to that. The parts that I had acquired are as follows. Timing chains, ADT 268 cams, mild port polish decked TT big valve head, Clutchnet clutch kit, MK4 metal head gasket, C2 motorsports cam specific software, ARP head bolts, SAI delete plug, cooling kit (crack pipe, low temp thermostat other odds and ends), radiator and heater hoses, and test pipe. (I am sure I am missing something)
Yeah, it needs some work. I do have a pretty big sentimental attachment to it and I will get it competed eventually (i guess a project is never "complete) It is currently in Rapid being worked on at the moment. So after it is back on the road I will get some more done to it.
Near future plans
Get it put back together and running
Body work and paint
Coil overs or air
shaved bay
Turbo (I am under the understanding the bottom end on these can handle quite a bit due to the fact that they where designed to be diesel engines) With that being said I will try it and see it what happens.
Some other things already done to it.
2" loweringsprings (either going with coilovers or air)
pieced together exhaust (will be redone once its back on the road)
Mk4 shift knob
Staggered ESM wheels
MOMO steering wheel and pedals
little bits and pieces here and there
Deck relocation
